What is Optimum Fitness?

These ladies are getting optimally fit!

What does it mean to be physically fit?

Does it mean you are strong? Does it mean that you have great cardiovascular endurance? Does it mean you are agile and are flexible? Or does it mean you have a balanced diet that has you firing on all cylinders?

The answer to all of these questions is yes, but as a whole not individually.

Here’s what I mean, physical fitness is often defined as the condition of the body as a result of a lifestyle that includes a balanced amount of cardio endurance, strength and flexibility as well as maintaining an ideal body weight. Also known as having a balanced diet.

Each one of these four components are very important to your overall health and wellness.

If you spend all of your time doing strength training but have a terrible diet and don’t do any cardio or stretching, you will probably end up stiff as a board with a belly.

The same goes for the runner who refuses to do any resistance training but wants to run 5 days a week. That person is more than likely in great cardio shape but will eventually have joint problems because they do not possess the strength or lean muscle mass to support the pounding of the pavement.

If you are only doing yoga for flexibility, you probably feel really great and are a lot stronger, but your cardio endurance will likely leave something to be desired.

If you lift weights, run, and stretch regularly, but your diet is in the crapper you might not feel bad because you are very active, but you will find it hard to keep weight off and there is always that rip to the doctor’s office when you get prescribed the dreaded blood pressure-cholesterol-diabetes (you fill in the blank) medicine.

So what do you do with this information you ask?

Well if you are a beginner you have a blueprint of what your workout needs to include.

If you are someone who has been working out for a while doing the same routine you got from your college roommate 15 years ago, look the info over and see what component you are missing. If you are in good shape but are looking to go to “Beast Mode”, read the above categories and see if anything is missing from your workout. If there is nothing missing than something needs to be taken to the next level!
